What are owned, earned and paid media?

Owned media is controlled more directly by the business, earned media is attention or advocacy others choose to give, and paid media buys placement; the categories can overlap and differ in control, trust, cost and durability.

What you will learn

By the end, you will understand:

  • Classify channels by control and placement economics
  • Recognize overlaps such as influencer and sponsored content
  • Build a balanced system without treating owned as fully independent

Three useful—not perfect—categories

TypeExamples
OwnedWebsite, app, customer experience and permission-based email; business controls content more directly.
EarnedIndependent coverage, genuine recommendations, reviews and voluntary sharing; the business cannot command the outcome.
PaidSearch/social ads, sponsorship, paid creators and native ads; placement or distribution is purchased.

Owned media still has dependencies

A website relies on hosting, domains and software; an email list relies on permission, deliverability and service providers. “Owned” means greater control, not absolute independence or ownership of people.

Keep portable data, source files, backups, access control and an exit plan. Permission to contact someone remains governed by purpose and law.

Earned attention cannot be manufactured honestly

A genuine review or independent article is earned. Paying for a testimonial, creator mention or placement makes the relationship material and requires appropriate disclosure; it is not purely earned.

PR outreach can influence discovery, but publishers and customers retain choice. Do not fabricate press logos, testimonials or ratings.

Paid media rents distribution

Paid channels can reach an audience quickly and test messages, but visibility depends on budget, auction/inventory, policy, creative and destination quality. When spend stops, paid placement usually stops.

Advertising should be recognizable as advertising. Native formats and endorsements require clear, prominent disclosure near the content people evaluate.

One asset can cross categories

Balance by strategic need

  • Durable authoritative destination
  • Direct permission-based relationship
  • Paid channel for controlled reach where justified
  • Earned trust through useful work/experience
  • Clear sponsorship disclosure
  • Portable data and assets

  • No dependency on one platform
  • Customer service supports reputation

Real-world example

Example: an original industry report

Example

A consultancy publishes research on its website (owned), respected publications cite it voluntarily (earned), and the consultancy runs clearly labelled sponsored distribution (paid). The citations are not described as paid endorsements, and the ad does not imply editorial approval.

Try this

Classify your current media

List ten audience touchpoints. Mark owned, earned, paid or overlapping; then add who controls access, what stops when spend ends, what permission exists and how portable each asset is.

Common questions

Questions beginners ask.

What is owned media?

Channels and experiences the business controls more directly, such as its website and permission-based email.

What is earned media?

Attention, coverage, recommendations or sharing that others choose to provide rather than the business purchasing as placement.

What is paid media?

Distribution or placement purchased through advertising, sponsorship or paid promotion.

Are social followers owned media?

The account is managed by the business but access depends on the platform; follower data and reach are not fully owned.

Is influencer marketing earned or paid?

If compensation or another material relationship exists, it has paid/sponsored characteristics and needs disclosure.

Are customer reviews earned media?

Genuine voluntary reviews are earned; incentivized or fabricated reviews violate platform and truth principles.

Does paid media work immediately?

It can create eligible reach quickly, but setup, learning, competition, policy and customer decision time affect results.

Should a business use all three types?

Not automatically. Choose a sustainable mix that supports the audience, offer, objective and risk.
