What are leads, conversions and retention?
A lead is a person or organization showing defined potential interest, a conversion is a chosen valuable action, and retention is the ability to keep creating value so customers continue, return or renew.
What you will learn
By the end, you will understand:
Define leads and conversions without inflating counts
Connect technical events to business outcomes
Explain retention, churn and lifetime value carefully
Visual explainer
See the idea clearly.
Audience interactions produce valid enquiries; qualified leads become customers through human and system steps; onboarding, value and support influence retention, repeat purchase or churn.
Definitions belong to the business
Term
Meaning
Lead
A person/organization with contact or identifiable intent that meets a defined potential-fit threshold.
Marketing-qualified lead
Meets agreed marketing criteria and is ready for the next review—not guaranteed to buy.
Sales-qualified lead
Accepted under sales criteria for a real conversation/opportunity.
Conversion
A chosen valuable action, from micro action to completed purchase, defined and measured explicitly.
Customer
Has completed the business’s defined exchange, not merely clicked a button.
Do not optimize to easy fake success
If every page view, button click and form start is marked as a primary conversion, reports and automated bidding may optimize toward activity rather than business value. Distinguish diagnostic events from primary outcomes.
Google Ads guidance notes that conversion counting and primary selection affect reporting/bidding. Lead actions are often counted once per interaction, while purchases may count every transaction; use transaction/submission IDs to deduplicate.
Lead quality needs an observable definition
Correct service/product need
Eligible geography or delivery scope
Real contact permission/path
Timeline or urgency where relevant
Capacity/fit
Duplicate/spam excluded
Human acceptance status
Outcome recorded
No sensitive/protected inference without basis
Retention starts with promise fulfilment
01
Accurate expectation
02
Smooth onboarding
03
Early useful outcome
04
Continued product/service value
05
Support and recovery
06
Relevant communication with permission
07
Renew/repeat or leave
08
Learn from churn
Retention measures vary
Model
Measures
Subscription
Renewal, churn, active usage and recurring revenue with cohort/time definition.
Retail/e-commerce
Repeat purchase, reorder timing, returns and contribution margin.
Project/service
Repeat engagement, referral, relationship duration and satisfaction context.
Marketplace/app
Relevant active behavior and retained cohorts, not installs alone.
Lifetime value is an estimate
Customer lifetime value estimates future or historical value over a defined relationship, often using revenue or contribution margin, retention and time. Methods differ. It is not guaranteed future cash.
Compare LTV and acquisition cost only when definitions, cohorts, time horizons and cost bases are compatible. Short-term high ROAS can coexist with poor retention or margin.
Respect relationship choices
A customer relationship does not grant unlimited marketing permission. Separate service messages from promotional communication, honor unsubscribe/withdrawal and avoid manipulative cancellation barriers.
Retention should come from continued value and fair recovery, not trapping people.
Real-world example
Example: one form is not one customer
Example
A service form submission is a lead conversion. The CRM deduplicates it, a person confirms service/location fit, and only a signed project becomes a customer. Reporting keeps form success, qualified lead and sale as separate stages.
Try this
Define three conversion levels
Write one diagnostic event, one lead conversion and one completed business outcome. State counting rule, deduplication ID, owner and what each cannot prove.
Common questions
Questions beginners ask.
What is a lead?
A person or organization with defined interest/contact and potential fit for an offer.
What is a conversion?
A valuable action the business deliberately defines and measures.
Is every website click a conversion?
No. Clicks can be diagnostic events; reserve primary outcomes for actions tied to real value.
What is conversion rate?
Conversions divided by eligible opportunities/interactions under a stated definition and period.
What is retention?
Continued customer relationship or useful behavior over a defined period.
What is churn?
Customers, revenue or users leaving/stopping under a stated definition and time period.
What is customer lifetime value?
An estimate of value across a defined customer relationship using an explicit method and assumptions.
Does a lead guarantee a sale?
No. Leads vary in fit, intent, timing and outcome.
