What are Search, Display, Video, Shopping and Performance Max?

Campaign types determine where ads can appear and which assets, feeds and automation are used; choose according to the customer journey and evidence required.

What you will learn

By the end, you will understand:

  • Compare the main Google Ads campaign families
  • Understand Performance Max without treating it as magic
  • Recognize the asset, feed and measurement dependencies of each type

Campaign type shapes inventory and controls

Search responds to active searches. Shopping uses Merchant Center product data. Display uses visual placements across sites and apps. Video reaches viewers on YouTube and eligible partners. Demand Gen uses visual formats across discovery-oriented Google surfaces. App campaigns promote eligible app actions.

Performance Max is a goal-based campaign that can access Google inventory from one campaign using Smart Bidding, assets, feeds and audience/search guidance. It is not simply “Search plus more.” Its reporting and control model differ.

Performance Max depends on inputs

Performance Max uses Google AI across bidding, budget, audiences, creative and attribution to pursue selected conversion goals. Advertisers provide goals, budget, assets, product feeds where relevant, audience signals, search themes and business data.

Automation does not remove strategy. Weak conversion goals, duplicate values, poor product data and generic creative can teach the system the wrong lesson. Review channel insights, search-term insights, asset reporting and downstream quality within the reporting Google provides.

Shopping begins with product data

Shopping visibility relies heavily on Merchant Center data such as title, price, availability, images and identifiers, plus the landing page and policy status. Feed accuracy is not an administrative detail; it shapes eligibility and customer trust.

Performance Max with a Merchant Center feed and standard Shopping can serve different control and strategy needs. Availability of features can vary by account and market.

Visual campaigns need visual strategy

Display, Video and Demand Gen should not receive leftover assets. The opening frame, message, format, sound assumptions, crop safety, captions and destination all influence understanding.

These campaign types can support awareness, consideration, remarketing and conversion goals, but attribution is harder than counting the last click. Use reach, view, engagement and conversion evidence according to the objective.

Choose with a readiness check

  • Where does the customer express or develop demand?
  • What creative or product feed is available?
  • Which conversion is trustworthy enough for optimization?
  • Does the budget support meaningful learning?
  • What control and reporting does the team require?
  • Can the destination fulfil the exact promise?
  • How will incrementality or assisted value be considered?

Real-world example

Example: a furniture retailer

Example

Search can capture “oak dining table delivery Dubai.” Shopping can present eligible products and prices from the feed. Video can demonstrate craftsmanship. Performance Max may pursue purchase value across inventory when product data, creative and conversion values are reliable. These campaigns can work together, but duplicated goals and uncontrolled overlap must be interpreted carefully.

Try this

Choose by evidence

For one objective, list where the customer signal occurs, the assets/feed required, the primary conversion, the reporting limitation and the reason this campaign type fits better than the alternatives.

Common questions

Questions beginners ask.

Is Performance Max always better than Search?

No. They use different inventory and control models. Suitability depends on goal, inputs, data quality, budget and strategy.

Can Shopping run without Merchant Center?

Product-led Shopping placements depend on an eligible Merchant Center feed and compliant product/website data.

What is Demand Gen?

A visual campaign family designed for discovery and demand across eligible Google surfaces such as YouTube, Discover and Gmail.

Does Display only mean banner ads?

Display uses visual formats across eligible websites, apps and Google properties, with multiple targeting and goal options.

Can one campaign type serve the whole funnel?

Some types span several moments, but no campaign removes the need for appropriate messages, destinations and measurement.

Why do creative assets matter to Performance Max?

The system assembles and serves assets across placements; weak or missing inputs limit the experience it can create.

Can I see every Performance Max placement and query?

Reporting has improved but is not identical to Search campaign control. Use available channel, search and placement insights with their limits.
