What are hooks, retention and original content?

A hook sets an honest expectation, retention shows whether people continue, and originality gives them a reason to choose this creator rather than a copy.

What you will learn

By the end, you will understand:

  • Write hooks that deliver rather than mislead
  • Read retention as audience evidence
  • Add original value even when using familiar formats

Visual explainer

See the idea clearly.

A hook is a promise

The opening tells a viewer why the next moment may be worth their attention. It can be a result, question, recognizable problem, visual change or unexpected fact. It should connect directly to what follows.

Clickbait creates a curiosity gap but fails the promise. It may earn a start and lose trust, retention or satisfaction.

Retention is not one magic percentage

Retention describes how people continue through content. Video analytics may show average view duration, percentage viewed and a timeline. Carousels and Stories use other progression or completion measures.

Length, audience intent, placement and topic affect the numbers. Compare like with like and inspect where behavior changes rather than chasing a universal target.

Diagnose moments, not just totals

PatternPossible Question
Early dropDid opening match the title, audience and first frame?
Spike/rewatchWas this moment useful, surprising or unclear?
Middle declineIs there repetition, delay or a confusing transition?
Strong completion, weak actionWas the next step relevant and clear?

Originality is contribution, not unprecedented subject

Most useful topics have been discussed before. Original value can come from first-hand experience, a clearer explanation, new evidence, a distinctive example, better demonstration, local context or a thoughtful opinion.

Copying another creator’s script, edit and framing adds little and may violate rights. Trends provide a shared format, not ownership of someone else’s work.

Build from real source material

  1. 01

    Customer question

  2. 02

    First-hand observation

  3. 03

    Evidence or demonstration

  4. 04

    Specific point of view

  5. 05

    Platform-native packaging

  6. 06

    Audience response

  7. 07

    Improved next version

Retention without manipulation

  • Deliver the title/thumbnail promise early
  • Remove unnecessary intros
  • Use structure and anticipation honestly
  • Change visuals when meaning changes
  • Make captions and audio accessible
  • Do not hide essential information only to force completion
  • Respect creator rights and attribution
  • End when the value is complete

Real-world example

Example: a mechanic explains brake noise

Example

The opening plays the actual sound and states what the viewer will learn. The mechanic compares two causes, shows the parts and explains when to stop driving. The hook is strong because the evidence arrives immediately—not because the danger is exaggerated.

Try this

Pay off the first sentence

Write three openings for one idea. Under each, write the exact moment that fulfils it. Delete any opening whose promise the content cannot prove.

Common questions

Questions beginners ask.

What is a hook?

The opening reason a suitable person may choose to continue.

What is retention?

Evidence of how viewers continue through content over time or sequence.

Is a high completion rate always good?

Not alone. Very short, misleading or irrelevant content can complete without business or satisfaction value.

Can I use a trend originally?

Yes, by adding genuine relevance and your own contribution while respecting rights.

Does originality mean inventing a new topic?

No. It means contributing meaningful experience, evidence, clarity or perspective.

Why do viewers leave after clicking?

The opening may be slow, mismatched, unclear, repetitive or aimed at the wrong audience.

Should every video reveal the answer at the end?

No. Give value at the pace the subject needs; artificial withholding damages trust.
