How are Facebook and Instagram used by businesses?

Facebook and Instagram combine profiles, feeds, communities, short video, Stories, messaging and business tools, but people use each surface for different reasons.

What you will learn

By the end, you will understand:

  • Choose between major Facebook and Instagram behaviors
  • Match Feed, Stories, Reels, Groups and messaging to a business purpose
  • Avoid treating one cross-post as a complete strategy

Visual explainer

See the idea clearly.

Facebook is several products in one

Facebook includes personal networks, Pages, Groups, events, Marketplace, video, Reels and Messenger. A local organization may find community and event behavior more useful than a polished Page feed alone.

Pages provide public business identity and publishing tools. Groups serve shared interests and need clear rules and moderation. Do not enter communities only to post promotions against their norms.

Instagram is visual identity plus discovery and conversation

Instagram combines Feed posts, carousels, Stories, Reels, Live, search/explore, profiles and direct messages. A profile can establish visual context; Reels can reach non-followers; Stories can support timely connection; DMs can support questions and sales where handled responsibly.

The same audience may behave differently on each surface. Use native insights to learn what leads to profile visits, follows, saves, messages or website actions.

Choose a surface by its job

SurfaceJob
Feed / carouselDurable profile context, explanation, visual portfolio and saveable information.
StoriesTimely updates, informal participation, reminders and direct response.
ReelsShort-video discovery, demonstrations and entertainment/education.
GroupsCommunity discussion around a shared purpose with moderation.
LiveReal-time event, Q&A or demonstration.
MessagesPrivate questions, support and sales conversations with response processes.

Cross-post the idea, not blindly the file

A Reel may work on both Facebook and Instagram, but captions, audience expectations, comments and profile context can differ. Review the crop, audio, call to action and destination for each.

Repurposing saves production effort. It should not create visibly broken crops, irrelevant hashtags or references to features unavailable on the other platform.

Business identity and messaging need operations

Keep name, location, hours, links and contact information accurate. Secure account ownership and assign access through Meta business tools rather than shared passwords.

If the profile invites messages, define response hours, escalation and privacy. Do not ask customers to post sensitive details publicly.

Recommendations and account health

Content may be allowed on a platform but not eligible for broad recommendation. Recommendation Guidelines and Community Standards influence distribution and enforcement.

Do not use engagement bait, copied watermarked videos, artificial followers or repetitive low-value posts as a substitute for audience value. Check Account Status and official notifications.

Practical selection

  • Is the audience using Facebook, Instagram or both for this behavior?
  • Does the idea need community, visual portfolio, discovery or urgency?
  • Can the business produce the required format well?
  • Can messages and comments be handled safely?
  • Are profile facts and links current?
  • Does the action continue on a suitable destination?
  • Which platform-specific metric represents the job?

Real-world example

Example: an events venue

Example

Instagram carousels show styled spaces, Reels demonstrate transformations and Stories announce last-minute viewing slots. Facebook Events and local Groups support community discovery when rules permit. Messages use saved but human-reviewed answers, and booking moves to a reliable calendar rather than remaining in scattered comments.

Try this

Assign a surface

Take three customer questions. Choose the best Facebook or Instagram surface for each and explain why: discover, explain, remind, discuss or respond privately.

Common questions

Questions beginners ask.

Are Facebook and Instagram the same strategy?

No. They share Meta infrastructure but have different surfaces, communities and audience behaviors.

What is a Facebook Page?

A public presence for a business, organization, brand or public figure with publishing and management tools.

What are Instagram Stories?

Temporary, full-screen updates with interactive and messaging features.

Do Reels only reach followers?

No. Recommendation systems can show eligible Reels to non-followers.

Should a business create a Facebook Group?

Only when it can support a genuine shared purpose and moderate it consistently.

Can the same Reel be posted to both platforms?

Often yes, but review rights, crop, captions, audience context and platform-specific calls to action.

What is Account Status?

A platform area for reviewing restrictions, removals and recommendation eligibility where available.
