Where can Meta ads appear?
Placements are the surfaces where an ad can appear, while formats determine how its image, video, carousel or collection is experienced there.
What you will learn
By the end, you will understand:
Recognize major Meta placement families
Design assets for placement behavior instead of one universal crop
Use Advantage+ placements and manual controls deliberately
Visual explainer
See the idea clearly.
♥
One campaign idea becomes a vertical Reel with safe-zone captions, a square Feed demonstration, a full-screen Story and a message entry point rather than repeating one cropped asset.
Placements are different attention environments
Eligible ads can appear across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Meta Audience Network surfaces depending on campaign settings. Common families include Feeds, Stories, Reels, search, in-stream/video, messaging and other app/site inventory.
Availability changes by objective, format, country and account. A placement is not just a rectangle size: people scroll, watch, tap and listen differently in each environment.
Advantage+ placements gives delivery more options
Advantage+ placements allows Meta to distribute across eligible placements where it predicts efficient results. Manual placements restrict the available surfaces. Broad placement availability can help the auction find opportunities, but only if the assets and destination work there.
Do not exclude a placement solely because one unadapted creative performed poorly. First test a native version and check measurement. Exclude where policy, experience, inventory quality or evidence justifies it.
Format the idea for the surface
Surface
Creative Need
Reels / Stories
Vertical, mobile-first composition; fast comprehension; safe zones; sound-aware but understandable without sound.
Feed
Immediate visual focus, readable mobile crop and a message that survives scrolling.
Carousel
A sequence of products, steps or features where each card makes sense and progression adds value.
Collection
A lead visual plus a product-browsing experience for eligible commerce use.
Messaging
A clear expectation of the conversation and operational ability to respond.
Reels creative belongs in Reels
Meta recommends native 9:16 vertical video, audio and key messages inside safe zones for Reels. Captions remain important because sound behavior varies. Use original or appropriately licensed audio for advertising.
Platform studies can guide testing, but reported average improvements are not guarantees for every advertiser. The offer, audience, production and market differ.
One concept can have several executions
Adaptation is not simply resizing. A six-second vertical product demonstration, a Feed comparison and a Story poll-style sequence can share one idea while using different pacing and framing.
Keep brand and claim consistency. Automated image expansion, cropping or text variation should be reviewed for inaccurate products, distorted identity or hidden disclaimers before use.
Destination and placement must connect
A mobile Reel should not send people to a desktop-only page. A click-to-message ad should identify expected response time and route. A product ad should open the correct product and availability.
Preview every eligible placement and complete the action on a real device. Ads Manager previews are helpful but not a full end-to-end test.
Placement QA
The main subject is recognizable immediately.
Key text and logos remain inside safe zones.
Video works with sound and remains understandable without it.
Audio and creator rights permit advertising use.
Automated crops/expansion preserve product and brand accuracy.
Captions, contrast and motion are accessible.
The call to action matches the destination.
Results are segmented by placement before major exclusions.
Real-world example
Example: a fitness studio trial
Example
The same trial offer uses a 9:16 Reel showing the class in motion, a Feed image with schedule and location, and a Story sequence explaining the three-step signup. Each opens the same mobile-ready booking route. The team reviews placement-level completed bookings, not only video views.
Try this
Storyboard three placements
Take one ad idea and sketch the first frame, proof and action for Reel, Feed and Story. Mark safe zones and how the message works without sound.
Common questions
Questions beginners ask.
What are Advantage+ placements?
A setting that lets Meta distribute across eligible placements according to predicted performance.
Are manual placements bad?
No. They can serve a deliberate test or constraint, but unnecessary restriction may reduce opportunities.
Can one image run everywhere?
It may be eligible, but native adaptations usually communicate better than automatic cropping alone.
What ratio suits Reels?
Meta recommends full-screen vertical 9:16 creative with important elements in safe zones.
Do Reels ads need sound?
Sound can improve fit, but creative should remain understandable when muted and use properly licensed audio.
What is a carousel?
An ad format with multiple cards that can show a sequence, products or related features.
Should a weak placement be excluded immediately?
Check asset fit, volume, attribution and business outcomes first. A poor universal crop may be the cause.
