What type of website does a business need?

The right website type is the smallest coherent system that supports the audience’s tasks and the business’s operations—whether that is a focused landing page, brochure site, publication, portfolio, store, portal or web application.

What you will learn

By the end, you will understand:

  • Compare common website types by purpose
  • Avoid choosing a type only from labels or trends
  • Recognize when one site combines several patterns

Types describe jobs, not quality

Start from tasks and operations

  • Who uses it
  • What they need to accomplish
  • Content volume/change rate
  • Transactions/data
  • Accounts/permissions
  • Integrations
  • Compliance risk
  • Team ownership
  • Budget/timeline
  • Expected scale
  • Offline handoffs

One site can combine patterns

A consultancy may use brochure pages, a work portfolio, Academy publication and enquiry application within one website. The patterns should share coherent navigation and ownership.

Do not split every feature into a separate site without a user, brand, security or operational reason.

Complexity grows after launch

Accounts require authentication and support; commerce requires payments, tax, inventory and returns; publishing requires governance; applications require product maintenance and data controls.

Estimate total ownership, not only initial design/build.

A landing page is not always a whole website

A campaign page can reduce distractions around one action, but users may still need business identity, privacy, terms, evidence and accessible navigation.

A landing page cannot compensate for a weak or misleading offer.

Real-world example

Example: a clinic chooses an informational site plus booking

Example

The clinic needs service explanations, practitioner details, locations, accessibility information and a secure external booking route. It does not need a custom social network simply because “web app” sounds modern.

Choose by job

List the top three visitor tasks, business processes, data involved and content-change frequency. Choose the smallest site type—or combination—that supports them and write what complexity you are refusing.

Common questions

Questions beginners ask.

What is a brochure website?

An informational site that explains a business, offer, evidence and ways to act.

What is a landing page?

A focused page designed around a particular audience, offer or campaign action.

What is a web application?

A browser-based system where people perform ongoing interactive tasks or manage data.

Can a website be more than one type?

Yes. Many sites combine informational, publication, portfolio, commerce or application patterns.

Does a small business need many pages?

Only enough to answer important questions and support tasks clearly.

Is a single-page website good?

It can suit a very simple offer, but separate URLs help when topics, search needs or journeys deserve independent pages.

Does an app replace a website?

Not necessarily. Public discovery, explanation and support often still need web pages.

Which type is best for SEO?

No label guarantees visibility. Clear useful pages, crawlability, structure and authority matter.
