How do address, service area and opening hours work?
Show an address only when customers can genuinely visit a staffed eligible location; otherwise hide the real base and use an accurate service area, while keeping regular, special and holiday hours truthful.
What you will learn
By the end, you will understand:
Distinguish storefront, hybrid and service-area address display
Set realistic service areas without fake branches
Maintain hours that match actual customer access
Visual explainer
See the idea clearly.
★★★★★
A staffed storefront displays its address, a mobile service hides its base and shows a service area, and a hybrid business shows both; a calendar distinguishes regular, special and temporary hours.
Address display follows customer access
Model
Profile
Storefront
Show the real address when customers can visit, signage/authority is appropriate and the business is staffed during stated hours.
Service-area
Use the real base for verification where required but hide it publicly when customers are not served there.
Hybrid
Show the staffed customer-facing address and also define the area where staff travel to customers.
A mailing address is not a customer location
P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are not eligible addresses. A virtual office cannot be used merely because it provides mail or meeting rooms; it must meet Google’s real staffing and customer-facing requirements.
Do not place a map pin at a road intersection, borrowed office, employee home or co-working address that does not represent the actual eligible operation.
Service area communicates reach, not rank ownership
Google lets service businesses define an area using supported places or boundaries. Its representation guidance says the overall service area generally should not extend farther than about two hours’ driving time from the base, though some business models may appropriately serve farther.
Adding many distant cities does not create locations and does not guarantee visibility there. Use the area the business can genuinely serve.
Hours must describe customer availability
Field
Meaning
Regular hours
Normal times customers can visit or receive the stated service.
Special hours
Temporary differences for holidays, events or specific dates.
More hours
Category-dependent periods such as pickup, delivery or access when supported.
Temporarily closed
A temporary closure state, not a substitute for inaccurate daily hours.
Permanently closed/moved
Use the appropriate supported process when the business no longer operates there.
Appointment-only needs honest treatment
An appointment-only business still needs a genuine eligible model. Do not claim broad “open” hours when no one is available or the location cannot receive the public. Use available attributes, descriptions and booking information to explain access.
Emergency or 24-hour claims should reflect real capacity to answer and serve customers, not an answering machine that schedules the next day.
Location changes need a controlled update

Update website and customer communications
04
Edit the existing profile through supported process
05
Reverify if requested
06
Correct directories and local pages
07
Monitor duplicate/old-place status
08
Avoid creating unnecessary profiles
Monthly location QA
Map pin is accurate
Address visibility matches model
Service area is realistic
Regular hours are current
Upcoming special hours added
Phone reaches the location
Website shows matching details
Access instructions remain true
No duplicate location appeared
Real-world example
Example: mobile cleaning service
Example
A cleaning company runs from the owner’s home and visits customers. The address is hidden, the realistic service area is listed, and hours show when customers can book/receive service. It does not rent virtual addresses in five cities.
Try this
Test one location against reality
Stand in the customer’s position: can they arrive at the shown address during every listed hour and receive the stated service? If not, classify the correct model and document the exact change required.
Common questions
Questions beginners ask.
Should a home address be visible?
Not when a service-area business does not serve customers there; hide it while retaining the real base for verification as required.
Can a P.O. box be used?
No. Google lists remote mailboxes/P.O. boxes as ineligible addresses.
Can a co-working space be used?
Only if the business genuinely operates an eligible staffed customer-facing location there under current representation rules—not merely a desk or mailing service.
How large can a service area be?
Google says it generally should not exceed about two hours’ driving time from the base, though some business types may appropriately serve farther.
Do service areas improve rank in every listed city?
No. They describe real service reach and do not create separate locations or guaranteed visibility.
What are special hours?
Date-specific changes to normal hours, such as holidays or temporary events.
Can a business list 24 hours if calls go to voicemail?
Only if it genuinely provides the represented customer service continuously; voicemail alone may mislead.
Should a move create a new profile?
Usually update the existing business through supported processes unless Google’s model-specific guidance requires otherwise.
