How do AI Overviews and AI Mode use the web?

Two AI experiences in Google Search
AI Overviews can appear within ordinary Google results when Google believes a generated overview may help. AI Mode is a more conversational search experience designed for longer, exploratory and follow-up questions. Availability, appearance and behavior can vary by country, language, account and query.
Neither experience replaces the whole web. Google says these features surface links so people can explore supporting pages. A response can still be incomplete or wrong, so important claims should be checked against reliable sources.
A question can become several searches
For a complex prompt, Google may use a “query fan-out” technique: it creates several related searches across subtopics and data sources. For example, “Which laptop is suitable for a travelling video editor?” may branch into battery life, weight, display, software requirements and current product specifications.
The system retrieves information, compares possible evidence and produces an answer with supporting links. This means visibility is not always one page winning one keyword. Different pages may support different parts of the response.

Retrieval and grounding
Retrieval means finding potentially useful information before generating an answer. Retrieval-augmented generation, often shortened to RAG, is a wider technical pattern in which a model receives retrieved material as context. “Grounding” means connecting generated claims to sources or data that can support them.
These words explain a process; they do not reveal a public formula for inclusion. Search systems use many signals, and source selection can change as the question, available pages and systems change.
Eligibility begins with normal search access
Google’s published guidance says pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search. There is no special AI file, schema type or secret markup required for AI features. Normal controls such as `noindex`, robots rules, snippet controls and paywall markup still matter.
Structured data can help Google understand eligible content when it accurately matches what users can see, but adding schema does not guarantee an AI citation or any other search appearance.
Create pages that remain useful after the summary
Answer the real question clearly and early.
Add original evidence, experience, examples or analysis.
Use headings and structure that make subtopics easy to locate.
Support important claims with accurate primary sources.
Keep dates, prices, policies and product details current.
Provide a reason to visit: a tool, comparison, data, process or deeper explanation.
Make text, images and video accessible to users and search systems.
Measurement has limits
Google includes traffic from AI features in Search Console’s overall Web search reporting. It does not provide a complete report of every generated citation, prompt or AI-answer position. Third-party tools may estimate visibility, but their samples and methods differ.
Measure the outcomes you can verify: relevant search discovery, engaged visits, subscriptions, qualified enquiries, sales and brand demand. Avoid claiming that one mention caused growth unless the evidence supports that conclusion.

The system may search separately for tax features, multi-location inventory, integrations and current pricing. A detailed comparison page might support the inventory section while an official product document supports tax compatibility. No single page has to supply every part.
